When the Rich Jerk blasted onto the scene Internet marketing scene, people certainly tried. Soon it seemed like every possible niche had some sort of “jerk” in it. Some worked, some didn’t.
Some “[enter niche here] Jerks” were destined to fail before their websites even went live. Unfortunately those that were destined to fail didn’t understand why they would fail. They thought if the Rich Jerk worked in Internet marketing, surely the “jerk” persona would work in other niches too. Here’s the key: the “jerk” persona didn’t work simply because he was a “jerk,” it worked because it was a fresh marketing approach. It worked because people secretly associate obscene wealth with arrogance (i.e., acting like a jerk).
In other words, you can’t attach the word “jerk” to your USP (unique selling proposition) and expect it to work in every niche. The secret is to come up with your OWN unique marketing idea.
